Two volcanoes joined by a flat isthmus, which is why the west and south shores are calm and the north shore is not.

The west side from Lahaina to Kapalua is a run of small sheltered bays, most of them fronted by low-rise condominiums and reached from the road rather than from a car park. The south shore at Wailea and Kihei is broader and sunnier. The north shore around Paia is where the wind goes, and where the windsurfers go with it.
