How this works

Two layers, kept apart

Every page here has a measured layer and an opinion layer, and they are deliberately easy to tell apart. The measurements on a beach page — sand, water entry, swimmability, surf, crowds, facilities, access — are the directory, and they are compiled the same way for every listing. Lily Mae's verdict sits on top of them in its own block, set in italics and marked in magenta, and can be removed without changing a word underneath.

Her verdicts and ratings are opinion. They are not survey results, not an average of other people's reviews, and not a first-hand report — they are one consistently held editorial view, offered so that the data has something arguing with it. Disagree with her and the listing is unaffected.

Where the listing data comes from

Coordinates, beach outlines, footpaths, parking and toilets come from OpenStreetMap, which is also what the map on each beach page is drawn from. Transfer times, facilities and the enum readings are compiled by us from operator sources and public records. Judgements — whether the snorkelling is good, whether a beach is busy — are ours, and are the part most worth writing to us about if you think we have one wrong.

Corrections

Beaches change. If a car park has closed, a right-of-way has been fenced or a reading is simply wrong, tell us and we will fix the listing.
