Thaa is the only atoll here with an empty register. Every other atoll in this directory holds at least one declared protected area; Thaa holds none, and that is a real difference rather than missing research.
It does not mean the reefs are poor. It means no site in this atoll carries the anchoring and fishing restrictions a declaration brings, and no part of it has been written up by the ministry in the way its neighbours have. If you are choosing an atoll for its protected diving, this is not the one; if you are choosing for quiet, the absence of designated sites is part of why it is quiet.
Thimarafushi has a runway and scheduled flights, so the atoll is straightforward to reach — which makes the empty register more striking, not less. Protection in the Maldives arrived in tranches, atoll by atoll, and Thaa's has not come.

Getting there
Thaa Atoll has one airport. The nearest to Velana is Thimarafushi Airport on Thimarafushi, 224 km south of it. The runway takes turboprops rather than jets, so every arrival connects through Malé or comes by seaplane.
Thimarafushi Airport is in the atoll and takes turboprops, so a domestic flight and a speedboat is the route. Seaplane from Velana is the alternative. Seaplanes fly between sunrise and sunset only, and the operator asks guests who want to reach the resort the same day to be in the Maldives by 15:30.

Protected water
The Ministry of Environment's register lists no protected area in Thaa Atoll. Nineteen of the country's atolls hold at least one and this is not among them. That is a statement about the register on 2026-09-21 and not about the reefs, which are dived and fished like any others — it means no site here carries the anchoring and fishing restrictions that apply inside a declared area.
